Carter Usm – 30 Something

May 7, 2010

Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine

Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine (frequently shortened to Carter USM) were a British indie band formed in 1987 by singer Jim “Jim Bob” Morrison and guitarist Les “Fruitbat” Carter. They made their name with a distinctive style of power pop, fusing samples, sequenced basses and drum machines with rock ‘n’ roll guitars and off-beat wordplay-loaded lyrics. They reached the height of their fame in 1992. Over the following years the band took on new members, topping out as a six-piece, but struggled to regain their earlier popularity. They split in 1998 after releasing seven albums.

30 Something was Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine’s second album and was released in 1991 on Rough Trade Records. It was recorded in 20 days on 8-track, costing only £4,000. The album is regarded by many to be the peak of the group, in terms of quality of music and popularity. The success of the album coincided with the renewed success of the Sheriff Fatman single, and so gained more sales in this way. It reached #8 in the UK charts on its original release, and number 21 when re-issued in early 1992.

One of the singles, Bloodsport For All, an attack on racism and bullying in the army, was released at the start of the Gulf War and consequently banned by the BBC.

Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)

May 1, 2010

Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon (Remastered) (1973)

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn’t rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like “On the Run,” “Time” and especially “Money” (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd’s best-known work, and it’s an excellent place to start if you’re new to the band. –Genevieve Williams (Amazon)

  Quality:     228 kbps / 4410kHz / Joint Stereo

- Release Notes ————————————————————- -

Rather than releas ing a new full-length, The Spill Canvas opted to record
songs for a pair of EPs in 2010. And when Abnormalities came out on January
12, this method seemed to fit them. The EP was a three-pronged mas ter piece,
fea tur ing pos si bly the most engag ing rock music that the group had ever
recorded. Three months later, however, the band is releas ing the sec ond
EP, enti tled Realities.  But if this is “real ity” – the nor mal twin
brother, as opposed to Abnormalities – then I want the crazy brother back.

That’s not to say that Realities fails as a col lec tion of songs. It
doesn’t. Each song displays a dif fer ent side of The Spill Canvas; how
ever, none of the tracks reach the level of the three songs on Abnormalities
or most of the tracks on 2007’s No Really, I’m Fine. They sim ply don’t have
enough panache. Single and lead off track “Our Song” grabs the lis tener with
a sim plis tic melody over cho rus lyrics of “we’ll never be strangers kiss
ing in the pour ing rain/ chas ing after your leav ing train/ but we know
that’s not how our song goes.” It isn’t half bad, but it’s only half good.
Kinda like that glass peo ple are always talk ing about.

Invoking Sting’s “Desert Rose” with a rock side makes for an inter est ing
intro to “Dust Storm,” but it never truly gets going, set tling for a
less-than-climactic cho rus and solo and a bland fade-out at the end. The
Spill Canvas brag on “Let Go” how’re they’re “not with that crazy woman any
more,” but yet again, it may have been the crazy that made them good. The
song is part 70’s rock, part Christmas bells, but yet again, it is only a
4-star track. Likewise with “10,000 Midnights,” which fea tures the EP’s best
melodies but never makes the lis tener say “hey, I want to hear that song a
hun dred more times.” Let’s just hope that for their next full-length, The
Spill Canvas reach back towards their crazy, abnor mal side a lit tle bit
   more.

- Track List —————————————————————- -

Year Of Release: 2010
Genre: Indie, New Wave, Post-Punk
Bitrate: 320 kbps

01 Walking Through That Door
02 Long Flight
03 Tin Man
04 An Apology
05 In Evening Air
06 Swept Inside
07 Inch of Dust
08 Vireo’s Eye
09 As I Fall

Comprised of J. Gerrit Welmers (synthesizers and programming), William Cashion (bass), and Samuel T. Herring (vocals), Future Islands has continued to make passionate music through an

electronic medium, for the past four years. They call their music, “Post-Wave,” taking in part from the emotional

fragility of New Wave and coupling it with the power and drive of Post-Punk.

Their music is spearheaded by Welmers, whose layers of synths and drums create the landscape for Cashion’s punching-strum style, that pulses and fights–the two–creating noise and bliss.

Herring, who has been called “one of the most magnetic frontmen in indie rock,” finds his space in between. Carving through the music, at times, with a whispering croon, and at others, with a

deathly wail.

In Evening Air marks the first full-length release from Future Islands since moving to Baltimore, and also their first full-length release as a focused three piece. However, there’s no lack of spirit, in

this paring down. More so, there’s a greater intensity and eye to detail than we have yet witnessed from the group. These changes are felt and heard. In Evening Air takes us and swirls us around

those feelings of growing outside of one’s city and one’s self. It moves through gripping loss and the search for peace from a heavy head, with an ease and understanding where there was none.

With production by Chester Endersby Gwazda, Future Islands fuses together their poetry with a dynamic musical range. Traveling from the slow burn to the highly ecstatic, while holding on to the

quill and not letting go. These songs are answers. They are born from fire and pain, yet are filled with light, acting as breathless testaments to love and it’s consequences. But this isn’t just a group

of songs. This is a book of stories.. From darkly quiescent and imaginative tales, to the passionate burnings of a searching heart. From the fear of being misunderstood and coming to terms with

the loss of love. Future Islands speaks a language of forever and always, with an honesty that falls but never touches the ground.

Sevendust – Cold Day Memory (2010)

April 23, 2010

Description:

Sevendust recorded ‘Cold Day Memory’ with Grammy nominated producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Staind, 3 Doors Down, Plain White T’s). It’s the band’s first new album with their original lineup back together. Guitar player Clint Lowery last recorded an album as part of Sevendust on 2003’s ‘Seasons.’
The first single, ‘Unraveling,’ is the most well received Sevendust track EVER. The song is an absolute monster and was co-written with Dave Bassett (Shinedown, Skillet). After being #1 most added at Active Rock, the song debuted at #29. It is their best ever chart debut, surpassing the #30 debut of ‘Enemy’ in September 2003. That song peaked at #6 and is currently their highest charting song to date.
